Looking to take your FCC GROL test exam? The GROL – General Radiotelephone Operator License (PG) which is granted by the FCC and qualifies the holder to operate, adjust, maintain and repair certain vessel and air radio systems. It also confers all the operating authority of the Marine Radio Operators Permit (MP). The PG and MP FCC commercial license are issued for the holder’s lifetime. Obtaining the GROL PG license is often considered an important credential and even a job requirement for some engineering positions in the communications industry. • Be a legal resident of (or eligible for employment in) the United States
• Be able to receive and transmit spoken messages in English.
• Pass a written exam as described below.

To obtain an FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) applicants must pass written Elements 1 and 3.

Element 1 – Basic radio law and operating practice. Must answer 18 out of 24 questions correctly.

Element 3 – Electronic fundamentals, operating procedures, RF circuits, radio practice, circuit components, propagation, antennas and filters. Must answer 75 out of 100 questions correctly.
